Colonel Philip Holmes' Work in Nepal

Colonel Philip Holmes, founder of the charity Palal Tree, dedicated 25 years of his life to improving the lives of children in Nepal.
After losing his wife Esther to depression, he established a children's charity in her memory despite having no prior experience in the field.
Holmes' first visit to Nepal in 1999 revealed the plight of innocent children imprisoned with their parents, prompting him to rescue seven children and establish a children's refuge.
His efforts gained media attention and led to an avalanche of donations and support, eventually influencing the Nepal government to outlaw the jailing of dependent children in 2001.

Shifting his focus, Holmes tackled the issue of Nepali children being trafficked into Indian circuses, where they faced abuse and exploitation.
He and his wife moved to Nepal to spearhead a program to combat circus child labor, setting an ambitious goal to resolve the issue within two years.
Holmes coordinated raids and rescues to free children from circuses, ultimately rescuing 350 children and bringing another 350 to safety through voluntary release by circuses.
Traffickers were identified and prosecuted, resulting in the imprisonment of 18 individuals and setting legal precedents.

The rescued girls faced challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder and stigma upon returning to their villages.
Holmes and his team provided education, skills training, and therapeutic activities to help the girls rehabilitate and move on with their lives.
They established a circus troupe with former circus children, who toured the world and experienced the stardom they had been falsely promised by traffickers.

By 2011, the trafficking route had been effectively shut down, and the Indian Supreme Court ruled to ban child performers, leaving hardly any more children to rescue.
Holmes' work expanded to include a refuge for children in need, which received significant support and donations.
He emphasizes that positive change is possible despite challenges, limited resources, and lack of skills, highlighting the transformative impact of their efforts on the lives of around a thousand children.
Holmes stresses the importance of commitment, passion, determination, and love, emphasizing that these qualities are more valuable than material resources.
He encourages others to make a start and take action, even when facing big challenges, and to be prepared for the unexpected, amplification, serendipity, and miracles that can arise from their efforts.
